Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal visits NHRC information center

As part of the series of programmes organized to celebrate of the 75th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal (Prachanda) visited the newly established Documentation and Information Centre at the headquarters of the National Human Rights Commission, Nepal (NHRC), located in Pulchok, Lalitpur.

The Documentation Centre, which demonstrates NHRC’s dedication to transparency and human rights, was inaugurated earlier this year with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Nepal. It stands as a comprehensive repository chronicling the history of human rights and NHRC’s pivotal role in safeguarding these rights since its establishment in 2000.

During his visit, Prime Minister Dahal expressed his appreciation for the collaborative efforts of NHRC and UNDP Nepal in documenting the conflict era and the significant contributions made by NHRC during that challenging period in Nepal’s history. The Documentation Centre serves as a crucial resource, archiving the memories and stories of that time while also documenting major incidents in the nation’s history.

Prime Minister Dahal conveyed his commitment to the effective implementation of NHRC’s recommendations, emphasizing the need for the reconstruction of NHRC’s building and supporting the expansion of the Centre. The centre, now accessible to the general public, human rights scholars, students, and researchers focusing on Nepal’s conflict period, is expected to benefit thousands of individuals globally.

Accompanied by Honorable Member Lily Thapa, UNDP Resident Representative Ayshanie Labe, and Acting Secretary Murari Kharel, Prime Minister Prachanda toured the Documentation Centre. UNDP and NHRC officials were also present during the visit, highlighting the collaborative efforts between the government and international organizations in promoting human rights awareness and preserving historical records.
